Caleb Kleppner, Center for Voting and Democracy: San Francisco Instant Runoff Voting Action Alert

Next week, look for an update on an important piece of California legislation -- AB 1039, to provide California with the flexibility to elect officers or fill vacancies by means of choice voting, cumulative voting, limited voting, or instant runoff voting. Caleb Kleppner will be among those testifying in Sacramento at an April 22 public hearing.

Check out the editorial in the April 16 SF Bay Guardian, Making IRV Reality.

URGENT: "Sign the contract / Start the voter education"

Things are moving along for the November implementation of instant runoff voting, but the City is still dragging its feet on signing a contract with the voting equipment vendor, Election Systems and Software (ES&S).

Please contact the officials below with a simple message: "Sign the contract with ES&S, let the public know that instant runoff voting is happening this November, and conduct the voter education program."

You could also ask them to let you know what the process is and what's holding it up. Please use phone, fax, and email as well as personal visits to the officials, and keep calling them until you get a satisfactory response. Key points to make:

1. Voters adopted instant runoff voting because it saves money and increases participation.
2. Sign the contract with ES&S.
3. Let the public know that IRV is definitely happening this November.
4. Start the voter education program that the city charter requires.

If you have any questions about this, please contact Caleb Kleppner, Center for Voting and Democracy. 824-2735, calebk@fairvote.org

Please contact John Arntz and the Board of Supervisors. The Elections Commission and City Attorney Herrera are the next priority:
